"PhotoBook Meetup New York" ...What's that?

Bryan Formhals, photographer and founder of LPV Magazine organized and sponsored his first "PhotoBook Meetup New York" at the photography studio of Noah Kalina in Brooklyn, New York, December 9, 2011. 

What it Is... 

"You pick a book - any book you want - and you bring it to the meetup, briefly present it, talk about it. Five minutes, just you and the book (no fancy presentation, no projections or anything like that). Everybody else will simply listen, maybe ask questions, and look. Maybe you'll know some of the books, but you might not know the different perspective or take you'll hear. Maybe you have never heard of some of the books. Anything is possible. Photobook Meetup New York is about the photobook as much as it is about the community of people who love looking at and discovering new books."

Several interested photographers, artists and photography book enthusiasts brought photography books they were passionate about to present to the group of attendees.

Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the hosts and asked to place our book on a table for display and helped ourselves to refreshments !



Attendees gather around the display table to examine photobooks of interest and dialogue with each other as to what they saw.



 

 

Brian Formhals begins the dialogue and presentations by introducing us to Edges, by Dolores Marat, his photobook selection for the event.

  

My selection was of one of my favorite photobooks that inspires me as a photographer, artist and earth science teacher -

Earth from Above, by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

We engaged in new photobooks, old photobooks, different and personal perspectives, and new friends were made.
